Cashman let Matsui go because Matsui could no longer play any defensive position, and he was only a DH at this point in his career. Cashman didnt want a full-time-DH player, since he wanted the DH to be given to the other everyday players on their off-days.

I’m Japanese, so I’ve watched it since Matsui joined the Giants at the age of 18, but rather than being a genius, he received batting instruction for 3 years after the game at the legendary Japanese coach Nagashima’s house and became GODZILLA. There was not a single Japanese person with that strong body. But he injured his wrist and knee at Yankees, and in the end he must have reached his limit.

The more important the game or at bat the better Matsui seemed to get. People forget that because the Yanks didn’t make/win the world series during those years but Matsui mashed year after year in October like in that nightmare 2004 ALCS.

Was sitting on the couch with my dad, jumped up and bent down towards the tv until it came into view and landed fair. Then we just both jumped up and hugged. Nothing against the phils but even after this first homerun, we knew it was over.
