2013年4月20日、ヤンキース対ブルージェイズの試合は同点のまま１１回の延長に突入。表のヤンキースの攻撃で、イチローが絶妙なバントで5連勝に貢献した。9回無死一、二塁で送りバントを試み、捕手に拾われたが３塁手がベースから離れていて捕手からの送球を捕球できず後逸、１、２塁の走者がホームインしてしまう。試合後のインタビューでイチローはバントについて「失敗です」と話した。だが、三塁がガラ空きだったと伝えられ「じゃあ結果としてベストのバントだね」とその後笑みをこぼした。

His weakness was his age. I just feel so bad for him that he retired without a single title to his name although it was his career choice that led him to having no title. His loyalty personality is what costed him. He likes to stay in one team, much like Tony Gwynn, Derek Jeter, etc. Unfortunately, Mariners management was so terrible that he was better off released. But I’m happy of the mlb retired him in Japan for his last game.

Seems like many pitchers have trouble throwing the ball from anywhere but the mound! The pressure that Ichiro puts on an infield with his speed is always a factor. Ichiro was incredible in so many ways. Not saying he didn’t do a lot of hard work but he was born to play baseball!
